The World Development Indicators are the statistical benchmark that helps measure the progress of development. The WDI provides a comprehensive overview of development drawing on data from the World Bank and more than 30 partners. The World Development Indicators publication is the World Bank's annual compilation of data about development.

Variables and Subcategories

This dataset includes variables in the following categories:

The following subcategories are also represented:

These variables can answer questions like:

  • What is the amount of surface area of land that is available for agriculture?
  • How many broadband subscribers are in there in the country? Broadband subscribers refers to the total number of broadband subscribers with a digital subscriber line, cable modem, or other high-speed technologies.
  • How much money is spent on arms imports?
  • What is the infant mortality rate?
  • What is the refugee population by country or territory of origin?

Data Quality

The data from these indicators may not be complete because of circumstances pertaining to conflict in regions. In addition, reporting mechanisms, statistical methods, coverage, practices, and definitions may differ, in particular in developing economies where statistical systems are weak. For these reasons, the data should be interpreted as representing trends and characterizing major differences in economies, as opposed to representing quantitative measures of those differences.[ref 1]
